Many months in planning, we are pleased to announce the next evolution of Burnlab. ENGRAM_design is everything Burnlab was meant to be when it was conceived by Brian Kritzman and I over beers on a December evening in Detroit back in '97... and much more. Please mosey over and take a peek at what we hope will become a very influential, and profitable :) new firm. I'm right giddy about the amazing team involved. This should be a blast. This will also be the last post on Burnlab.net until the new version is unveiled on May 1. Stay tuned. Oh, and two quick hellos... Thanks to Sven Va[e]th for an incredible set at Vinyl on Saturday and at Baktun on Monday, and hello to everyone from the Saddle Creek Records message boards... the Agenda Suicide video is here. Cheers. Brooklyn, NY, April 12 | 02, 2:12 am One last post for tonight: a very interesting interview with Adult. from October 99. Thanks to Bitboy! "Uh, where's the Generic section?" Due to my extreme ADD, I'm thinking about doing a Burnlab zine of sorts... a one-off, high quality magazine/book featuring cross-disciplinary work from some of our favorite people. The theme will likely be musicians on art and design / artists and designers on music. Would anyone buy it... or like to contribute? Hmm? I'll get on that as soon as we get the new business rolling and sort out Burnlab V3 [so big, we're skipping over V2 entirely.] By the way, our 3rd year online starts tomorrow! And with the eminent launch of ENGRAM_design on Monday [yes there's a date: April 15], BURNLAB_design will cease to exist. A brief history, for those who were wondering: Born December 1997 at Majestic Cafe on Woodward Ave., incorporated March 8, 1998, Burnlab.net launched April 13, 2000, deceased April 15, 2002. Not really deceased... just morphed into something entirely different. Anyway, lots of good stuff to look forward to real soon. Cheers, -Mike Brooklyn, NY, April 11 | 02, 1:45 pm This from Josh Glazer: This Thursday, 4/11 [tonight] Myself and Jonnie O will be playing in the Ghostly Glassroom @ Necto in Ann Arbor, MI Feel free to stop by and hear us take our favorite records and mix them very poorly ;-) We will be playing from 12-2 Hope to see some of you guys there. ---- Aside from Jon's collection of classic +8 vinyl and the stack of old Wax Trax! 12"s I unloaded on him recently, expect some new and classic Electro [or whatever it's called], including recently acquired Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Hell and Berlin. Sweet. Brooklyn, NY, April 10 | 02, 5:08 am [ EDITED April 12 | 02 12:00 am ]Saddle Creek Records have asked that we take down the video clips for the time being until they decide how the video will be distributed. Fair enough. [EDITED April 12 | 02 12:22 am] Okay, that said, MK12 has apparently fixed their server troubles and you can get the video right from their main page. Go download yourself a copy. It's amazing work. Brooklyn, NY, April 9 | 02, 6:18 pm
Back from a short but sweet visit to Detroit. Thanks to Jon and Delia of the Cass Corridor Lab for their hospitality. The Rational Euphoria exhibition was fabulous, as expected. You can still catch it through May 17th [see previous post for details.] The after party was at Union Street [where else?] Pictured at left: sculptor Ed Sykes, Burnlab's architect in residence Andy Malone, Joel Park [not as drunk as he looks here], man of the hour Brian Kritzman and the lovely Gerti Schrattenthaler. Other Motor City news...Saturday was the opening for Ideas For Sitting [14 "chairs" by Cranbrook artists and designers] at the Detroit Contemporary. Also, don't miss the fabulous article on the Michigan Central Station in the May issue of Metropolis. Here are some recent favorites: Olive: gorgeous site / young architecture firm. Pugh+Scarpa: fascinating new "To Live and Draw in LA" feature by Paul at Archinect. Helmut Lang [The ultimate accessory for grown-up Goths.]
Our heroes Diller+Scofidio have won the design competition for Eyebeam's technology museum in NYC, complete with giant robot spider! Fischerspooner continues down the path toward world domination by recently signing a global distribution deal with Ministry of Sound. So, will Electro be the 'New Grunge'? Dangerous territory, but good New Wave will always be good New Wave. And, if it means better quality music at the mall... I'm not complaining. As I've said before, if they pull off super stardom, it will be the greatest piece of performance art ever. Greg at Core 77 has concocted a great new feature this month, way up our alley: Designer Playlists. View what tracks are in heavy rotation at the Brooklyn Lab here and then submit your own.
After many months of preparation, ENGRAM _design - our new commercial design venture will indeed launch within the week. More info soon... I promise. Burnlab will receive a complete overhaul as a result. Look for a new Blogger based Lab Report and a cleaner interface throughout. Cheers, -Mike Brooklyn, NY, March 25 | 02, 11:57 pm Okay, I screwed up performance dates two posts in a row. Aldrin played Tronic Treatment last Monday. I best leave this sort of thing to the pros at Flavor Pill. Ryan Mee and Fauzin Mdisa from the LA division are heading this way for the New York Auto Show. [We exhibit designers get excited about these things. Forget the cars... did you see that nice aluminum bracket under the desk over in the Volvo booth? Brackets...mmmmm.] Anyway, Fauzin has new sketches and such at Biowomen.net: architectural surface studies of the human body. Man, Fauzin can sketch! [The site is now optimized for 1024 pixel wide screens... instead of 6000 or whatever it was. ;) Thank you.] Kritzman has been working on the Rational Euphoria exhibition for about a year and it opens this Friday. Rational Euphoria is a major design retrospective which draws from many collections, including those of Arkitektura, the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bill Porter [one of the world's leading collectors of industrial design and designer of the '70 Firebird], and Brian's own stash of nice objects. The Exhibit takes place at the Elaine M. Jacob Gallery on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit, March 29 - May 17. There will be an opening reception on Friday, April 5th. I'll be flying in for sure. If you live in Detroit, there's no excuse to miss this one. :) Brooklyn, NY, March 25 | 02, 1:17 pm Cyborgs in Oxford and nanotech armor at MIT. Welcome to the 21st century, thank you very much. David Caon is fast becoming the cult hero of CAD monkeys everywhere. Two of our friends have pulled their sites down, presumably in preparation for the May 1 Reboot. Nonetheless, TomM [Ximeralabs] and Sébastien [Houde 666] have some killer teaser pages. I haven't decided yet if Burnlab will take part in the Reboot... Like I need another distraction. DJ Aldrin from Zouk in Singapore makes his NYC debut tonight at Tronic Treatment [@ Baktun on 14th St.] I've raved about Aldrin's skills several times here. Magda and special guest Mr. Hawtin played to a packed house at Baktun three Mondays ago. Should be another very good night. The prolific Daniel Myer has three new Haujobb tracks up at Planet-Myer.de. Also word of some Architect shows coming up in NYC next month. Even for dedicated fans, it's hard to keep track of all Daniel's projects, so here is a quick style guide: Haujobb: darkwave/techno/industrial/EBM Aktivist: house Architect: Warp-style IDM Hexer: jungle G-Flow: trip-hop H_M_B: darkwave/industrial Also see S'Apex, Scope, Myer, Newt, Clean, Cleaner, etc., etc. Busy boy. Speaking of busy... Craig Drake, an old schoolmate and partner in chaos, is up for a Flashforward award for his 1-800 Contacts site. You've probably seen Craig's work around... if you've heard of Adobe. Check it all out at Choochtronix. Conspirator Brian Kritzman is curating a major design exhibition called Rational Euphoria. More info on this real soon. Brooklyn, NY, March 20 | 02, 2:10 pm Oops... Herbie Hancock is next Wednesday, the 27th. All the better. Brooklyn, NY, March 20 | 02, 1:33 pm If you're in NYC tonight, I recommend the following agenda: 6:00pm - The Easy Showcase: 14 sketches in 45 minutes, and an open bar. Brainchild of Corey Carthew, Mark Greenfield and Constance Tarbox, The Easy Showcase presents the talents of 12 great actors from the Faux Real Company, including Burnlab's own Don Downie. 8:00pm - The one and only Herbie Hancock live at Irving Plaza... with his Fender Rhodes. 12:00am - F train to Brooklyn for a pint at Boat on Smith Street. If you're lucky, Tony will be wearing his "F*** you Satan you a hoe" t-shirt behind the bar. Play an Acid Horse track from the jukebox for me if the indie-rockers get to be too much. Brooklyn, NY, March 14 | 02, 6:52 pm Dave Pinter just reminded me that Carl Craig and Kevin Saunderson are playing at the Shelter in NYC tomorrow night. See you kids there. Also, check the Cooper Hewitt's adult education calendar here. Highlights include: Ed Fella and John Maeda speaking at F.I.T. - Monday, April 1st LOT/EK studio visit - Tuesday, April 16th Jay Mays speaking at the Lighthouse Conference Center - Tuesday, April 30th Asymptote studio visit - Tuesday, May 7th Diller+Scofidio speaking on environmental design at Parsons School of Design - Thursday, May 9th Brooklyn, NY, March 14 | 02, 2:27 pm For the three or four regular Burnlab readers who didn't get my spam yesterday, this is the funniest and most offensive thing I've seen since Tom Green and Ali G got into a slapping fight at the Super K: Get Your War On. Tom Muller and Ashley Wood launch Plan B Science. Expect great things. Happy belated anniversary to our friends at Core77. Seven years of industrial design on the internet! [Does Al Gore know about that?] The ADHOC Group presents Battle of the Designer DJs. [Designers who are DJs, who are designers.] Speaking of DJs, Paxahau has archived some recent sets, including John and Rich's tag team set at Motor last Friday. Brooklyn, NY, March 10 | 02, 3:25 pm Our friend Kid Demo [a.k.a. Justin Fines] is on the move again... this time settling in Chicago with Someoddpilot. He'll be speaking and showing new work at Smart Bar on March 23rd. See Anonymous Federated for more info. Big thanks to Computerlove for linking us again. Love Computerlove. Check out Emil's work at Robutt.com, and Fred's at Disparate.net. For all ye designers and architects, find that amazing new material you didn't even know you were looking for at Material ConneXion. Diller+Scofidio uses their services, which is enough to make me want to sign up. While we were in London, I picked up the Murray+Vern catalog designed by TDR back in 98, at MagMA books. Cyberfetish meets high design. MagMA is like Other Music for design books: only the best and most obscure. And for something truly beautiful and twisted, visit Oculart. Brooklyn, NY, March 04 | 02, 5:47 am
Back from the UK and always gloriously surreal Barcelona. Big thanks again to Chris Daniels and the Doyles of Hampstead. [I doubt Tim Burton will find a more crooked house.] New transport device: the Red Hook office is now tearing up the BQE in a 1989 Saab 900 Turbo sedan. Same body style as the blue one used to stalk the streets of Detroit, but in much better condition.
Catching up on some music news... Luke Slater's show at OpenAir a couple weeks ago was superb. FYI: Mr. Slater is among the ranks of superstars now using Final Scratch. Magda is in New York with her record crate and a stack of promo CDs with sleeve design by your's truly and photography by Nicola Kuperus of Adult. [left] See Magda spin at Baktun on 14th Street in Chelsea tonight! Here are some photos from Disco Nouveau at the Labyrinth in Detroit. [See right column on Ghostly's main page.] Go here for Don's Downie's review of the event, co-produced by Burnlab's own Jon Ozias. Disco Nouveau is on the road, stopping right here in Brooklyn on March 8th, featuring John Selway. Speaking of Detroit, as we often do, if anyone hasn't seen the White Stripes latest video... well, just go download it now!
Brooklyn, NY, February 12 | 02, 11:38 am AppleSkinz: The flames and the flag are cheez-o, but the simulated woodgrain is awesome. Give me a G4 with a case by the interior design department at Buick. Yes! [Link from BitBoy.] Chad Clark in LA sent this link, and I'm all over these: Trippen shoes. Worth another trip to Berlin. By the way... we hit the skies again next week. The dates are London: 2|17 - 2|19 and Barcelona 2|19 - 2|23. Consider this a desperate plea for cool people to hang out with. Email. Brooklyn, NY, February 11 | 02, 5:47 pm Burnlab V1.6.7 with some minor updates: 1) The new splash image is our brand new furnace here at the Red Hook lab. [The old furnace got "Red Hooked" off the roof into the junkyard next door. Nice.] 2) Some archiving in Purgatory. 3) New Current Media selections [lower left of this page]... - Walking On Wires by Gaiden: Ultra crunchy, aggressive techno from Steve Stoll and Patrick of Front 242. That's right... Front 242. Yeah! This record guaranteed to complicate road rage. - www.thethirdplace.com: Gorgeous user interface explores what the web can be. - Soak Wash Rinse Spin by Steve Tolleson: Still the book of the moment. It's been out for quite a while now, but it's so damn good I can't justify replacing it with anything. Buy this book! Officially hooked on NewsToday. It's so darn simple, it's brilliant. Almost too much information. My other favorite portal is still ComputerLove. Gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling. Current favorite personal news page is iRobotnik. BitBoy's enthusiastic insights on music, technology and life in general is good readin'. Go BitBoy go. On the music front, Luke Slater's new album Alright on Top due out on Mute soon! Without getting my source in trouble, I'll say it's both brilliant and unexpected. Mr. Slater himself appears at OpenAir in NYC this Wednesday, courtesy of the Static crew.Since the official site seems to be down, I've taken the liberty of archiving Slater's All Exhale video for your pleasure. [just to warn ya, it's 9.8MB and your browser might act a bit buggy until the first 100k or so load up, but not to worry.] Well worth the wait. Big welcome back to Kings County to Jared, who leaves his experiment in East Village dwelling for the friendlier confines of Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. Good to be home. On the subject of NYC, I finally got the nerve to go see the WTC site up close on Thursday. [It's been bad enough looking at it every day from across the harbor.] I actually lost my bearings and had to picture the towers to figure out where I was, even standing right there on the corner of Church and Fulton. New Yorkers are tough, blah, blah... but I think most people agree that we just want the towers to still be there. As irrational as that thought is, it's enough to make you stomp your foot and say, "I want them back." The site is so clear now, it looks like any construction site... only one that consumes a dozen city blocks. I am more fearful now than any development smaller than the original towers will be a travesty. Memories are too short. Brooklyn, NY, January 29 | 02, 5:04 am Talk about attention deficit disorder.... I have so much work to do, and how do I spend the evening? Writing an essay about Fischerspooner, of course.
Brooklyn, NY, January 28 | 02, 5:31 pm I put over 700 miles on the rental Chrysler in LA last week... that pretty much explains just how decentralized the nation's second largest city is. As much of an urban planning nightmare as LA is, it's full of cool stuff and inspiring places. Photos from the obligatory pilgrimage to Culver City here. Recently posted on Core77 and Archinect: an amazing archive of early Atari renderings. Nice. I just ran across an article about Burnlab in RickerNotes, the University of Illinois School of Architecture journal. [issue #12] Thanks! One of the many, many Detroit expats now living LA, my old CCS pal Fauzin has two experimental sites well worth checking: Atmesfer explores architecture in all its strange and beautiful ways, and Biowomen is an exploration of the architecture of flesh in photography, sketches and digital models. [Word of warning: both sites are optimized for huge monitors.] This one is for Chad and Israel in LA: Went over to Fun in Chinatown to see Adult's French counterparts Miss Kitten and the Hacker on Thursday night. [My skinny tie and Eurotrash haircut loved it!] See Jared's review on Geek-boy.com. Also, The Faint is doing two shows in NYC this week. Bleep, bleep, click...
Los Angeles, CA, January 15 | 02, 8:39 pm The chemistry museum I've been working on for the past 15 months finally opened on Friday. Save a few details, [there are always a few details, aren't there?] I think it turned out quite well. Photos here. First time I've done something that comes with a brochure! That's pretty neat. Big thanks to our good friends at Multimedia People for bringing the interactive displays to life. Very smart, inspirational work from NYC's Architecture Research Office. Forgotten Detroit showcases a handful of landmarks on the verge of extinction, including my personal favorite: the Book Cadillac Hotel. If anyone wants to send a check for, say $200 million, I'd be more than happy to see to the restoration of this masterpiece. [Thanks to Charlie Zink for the URL.] Jon O sends news about the future of electronic music I've been waiting for since about 1992: GAIDEN is Steve Stoll and Patrick Codenys [Front 242]. Hard driving Blade Runner style techno that might be called 'industrial' in another decade. Remix work by +8 crunchmaster Speedy J. I get hundreds of e-mails every day that say, "I'm also a designer with self-diagnosed ADD, considers coffee drinking exercise, posts nearly every though in my head on a confusing, over designed website and averages over 70 flights a year. What kind of gum do you chew to keep your ears from popping on descent into Narita International?" Well, that's an obvious answer:
Singapore, January 7 | 02, 11:58 am Check out our friend Marcus' killer communication booth entry >here<. [warning: 1.5Mb Flash file] Singapore, January 6 | 02, 7:09 pm Forgot just how cold Detroit is. New York is really cold, but Detroit is really cold. I'll be hiding out in more reasonable climates most of the winter. January: Singapore 01|05 - 01|13, Los Angeles 01|13 - 01|21. February travel dates just confirmed: London (okay, London is pretty cold) 02|17-19, Barcelona 02|19-23. [Send me a note and I'll buy you a pint.] Before any more requests come in, Olivia has first dibs on the chairs if I can't find a place for them... but don't count on that :) While rifling through Demo's links, I came across this gem to eat your time: Neasdan Control Centre. Although almost all of this vast archive is extraordinary, the Replikit sketchbook is so beautiful it hurts.Brooklyn, NY, January 2 | 02, 4:48 am V1.6.6: a fresh face for the new year. I was shocked as anyone to log onto Archinect yesterday and see that we won first place in their design competition for a future communication booth. I'll be quick to acknowledge I thought many of the other finalists were better, or at least better executed. Much thanks to the crew at Archinect and the jurors. Sort of on the subject... I'll be in L.A. January 13 - 21. If anyone would like to meet up, please drop me a note. Burnlab is teaming up with some majorly talented people and is preparing to spin off all commercial work into a brand new design consultancy. Look for an announcement in the next couple weeks. cheers, -Mike Brooklyn, NY, December 31 | 01, 3:32 pm Remember when 'alternative' meant something? Before [as Vice magazine put it] "Lollapalooza opened a portal that allowed jocks into our world"? When night-life meant trespassing, driving around aimlessly and plotting world domination over endless cups of coffee at Denny's? Sharp sarcasm with fake British accents and art school idealism? Long Island's My Favorite remembers. [Think 1 part Smiths, 1 part Lightning Seeds, a tablespoon of Cure and mix thoroughly with Jerry Lewis. Really.] Singapore, December 15 | 01, 2:21 pm I don't plug guitar bands here that often, so this must be important. The legendary American Mars has a new album out. Record release party at the Magic Stick in Detroit tonight. [For those in Brooklyn, yes, that's the great disk in the jukebox at Boat. You can still order it from our old cohorts at Planet Ant.] Check Metrotimes.com for more details. Singapore, December 12 | 01, 4:53 pm This is exciting: gorgeous new site for Morphosis - perhaps the most influential architecture firm of our generation - granted you're around 30 and have an affinity for both poetry and heavy machinery. Don Downie from the Brooklyn office caught the aforementioned Disco Nouveau night in Detroit. Review here, with sound. (Might start a Burnlab jukebox feature at this rate. We'll see...) Well, krikey... while I'm at it, here's a loop from a most under-appreciated band. [Too industrial for ravers and too techno for the Trenchcoat Mafia. Plenty Cyberpunk for me though.] We've had great submissions from new friends over the past couple days. Check out the fabulous World Trade Center project from the ADHOC Group in San Fran, and the sharp homepage of French designer Donna di Stefano: yes-indeed.net. Yes indeed. We're days away from a major announcement. Here's a little hint:
Okay... hint to the hint: it's the logo and the name. More soon. Singapore, December 11 | 01, 9:43 am A big hello to all our friends at Archinect. See you kids in January if all goes well. The weekend was all we could hope for. Mr. Garnier's official site here. Jon O pretty much gutted the Labyrinth in Detroit for Disco Nouveau featuring Adult. Photos soon. Also check the revisions at Core77, where I'm now an official contributor. [Won't be back to NY in time for the next OffSite, but you should go.] Singapore, December 6 | 01, 7:16 am Another busy, busy trip to the 'Pore. Looking forward to Kevin Saunderson and Laurent Garnier at Zouk. Travel tip: there are better things to do than spend the night in the Bangkok airport. Trust me. Fantastic personal site of architect Marcus Bertolino here.
Not sure what to make of PipsLAB, but it's ghettofabulous... in a Dutch sort of way. Samsonite BlackLabel: my current fashion addiction. Mike Young's new agency, Weworkforthem, is up and running. Nice name. And say hi to mad Oz at Forcefeedsweede too: mastermind of Designforchunks. Brooklyn, NY, November 26 | 01, 1:11 am Here's how we covered the ceiling at Limelight with parachutes Wednesday, and a nice little shot of Mr. Hawtin and the DE9 gear. A darn nice time was had by all.
Brooklyn, NY, November 24 | 01, 1:36 pm The Detroit Contemporary Gallery's Actual Size Biennial is on exhibition now through December 16th. All pieces in the exhibition are 8.5 x 11 inches and the 200 participants cover 3 generations of Detroit artists. This virtual who's who of the Motor City art world features a half dozen Burnlab conspirators and friends.
Brooklyn, NY, November 20 | 01, 2:44 am Obligatory plugs: Big thanks to Computerlove, Superstar and Alterlab for linking us. All great sites to check out. Also, Burnlab Detroit bureau rep. Jon O and our friends at Plus 8 return to the Big Apple yet again... this time taking over the notorious Limelight on Wednesday night. (I may be chilling in the Geiger Room if it gets too nuts.)
Brooklyn, NY, November 16 | 01, 8:28 am Please welcome the latest addition to the Red Hook office. Daisy is 60 pounds of grunting English bulldog, and a nice contrast to Socrates, our lanky, graceful, black hound dog. Singapore, November 6 | 01, 12:18 pm Winter is upon us...well, not in Singapore. Anyway, version 1.6.5 goes live with a number of enhancements. Most notably, photographer Sherry Gaines joins the conspiracy. Check out her work in the new Frozen Images section at Purgatory. We'll be adding more work by innovative photographers here in the coming months. Also check the belated tribute to the Mobile Lab prototype model 417_A. [also known as "the Saab", or "that damn Saab" to my neighbors, to whom I was known as "that damn freak".] It's no longer with us, but if you spent any time in downtown Detroit late at night, you probably saw it buzzing around. I've had very little time to surf the web lately, so if you have some cool stuff to share, please send it this way. Please no giant Flash sites full of tired gimmicks though ;) -Mike Singapore, October 28 | 01, 12:18 pm Here are some updated images of the chemistry museum I'm designing here in Singapore. Election Day is coming up fast. For residents of Royal Oak, Michigan, get out and vote for John Tenney! Singapore, October 27 | 01, 8:02 pm Not much news, just working hard. Here's something new for you: a sneak peek at Magda's promo kit I'm working on. Magda, as you all know, is Detroit's next big thing. :)
Brooklyn, NY, October 16 | 01, 9:30 am My flight was grounded by the Port Authority yesterday due to "a suspicious substance." Lovely. We'll try again today. Here's some wonderfully twisted shit that won't hurt you: the new Aphex Twin site. Brooklyn, NY, October 15 | 01, 8:44 am Off to Singapore again today. I must say this is the first time I have serious reservations about flying. Mainly, I just don't want to be so far from New York right now. We've had very good off-line reviews of the WTC proposal from the staff at Yamasaki Associates. Thanks again to Archinect, Urbanism.org, Core and Artkrush for posting the link. Check out Jordan Crane. We love visual artists using and abusing the web with such cleverness :) This past week was the Electroclash festival in New York. Thursday evening started at Other Music, for Richie Hawtin's in-store demo of the Final Scratch system. He really put the software and DE9 gear through its paces for the watchful eyes of all the music geeks crammed into the little store. Super crisp and, uh... electronic. Yummy. [Make sure to check out the DE9 interactive piece at M_nus.] Then it was up to Exit for the festival proper. [I edited out a review of the Peaches show here. To borrow Jon's phrase, I'll just say it was "different than good."] Okay, skip ahead to Fischerspooner... granted, I love Fischerspooner. Trouble was, the "live set" was 100% lip synched to CD. Casey Spooner's amusing quips and the outrageous costume changes were entertaining, but I really wish something was live. They did play 2 new songs and really, they can get away with anything in New York. Friday. Electroclash moves to Webster Hall. Very different crowd. Adult. Flawless, super cool, genuine, and as live as you can get [when everything comes out of little metal boxes with lots of knobs and wires.] Detroit's superstars of geek-chic easily stole the show, not only from headliners Chicks On Speed, but for the whole festival. Many comments in the audience to the tone of, "They're my new favorite." People will argue, but nowhere can touch Detroit for breeding innovation and integrity, across most of the arts, but especially in music. Speaking of... new grfx work for M_nus' DJ Magda coming out of the Burnlab soon. Also, I'm working on a gallery section for conspirator and photographer Sherry Gaines. Stay tuned. Brooklyn, NY, October 3 | 01, 11:19 am [my article about skyscrapers and new urbanism has been moved to the WTC section.] Brooklyn, NY, October 2 | 01, 4:41 pm
Fresh talent found wandering the fjords: check out Oslo 'superstar' Sigurd Kristiansen. Also be sure to visit our friends Sébastien and Ashley if you haven't yet. Brooklyn, NY, September 29 | 01, 3:00 am Not to dwell, but there's some synchronicity going on with WTC memorial concepts. I just read about Creative Time's Towers of Light project. Instead of cubes, they're using columns of bright white light - the most beautiful and poetic medium for this purpose. I have to say that their proposal is much more elegant than mine, and much more likely to happen. Well, Archinect likes our concept. (Curious to hear what their readers think when they figure out I'm not actually an architect...)
Brooklyn, NY, September 28 | 01, 4:51 pm Here is the press release for Art of Fischial, organized by Burnlab's own Michael (Micho) McAdow. Expect some fine electro, techno, IDM and straight up noise, and visuals like the set from Brazil. Contact Micho for more info. AntiLogic (Multidisk) John Briggs (Marooned/Diffused) Detronik (Multidisk) Tony Drake (Time:Space/Transmat) Jason Hogans (Really Nice Recordings/Planet E) Kelsey Vaugh Thomas (BlueLife Productions) Colton Weatherston (Year Of The Robot) Visual Installations and live video mixing: by Micho aka Synthetic/Detronik 09 | 29 | 01, 9pm @ The Magic Stick: 4120 Woodward, Detroit MI Brooklyn, NY, September 26 | 01, 12:45 pm Version six goes up today. Got the portfolio done. Still working on the WTC proposal and stuff. More soon.
