The New York art scene may go all sleepy during July, but out in Los Angeles things are hopping. The Absolut L.A. International Biennial Art Invitational, July 8-Aug. 16, 2003, is celebrating its ten-year anniversary with exhibitions of works by over 200 artists from 30 countries at 75 galleries and art institutions throughout the city and environs. Organized by dealers Robert Berman and William Turner, the biennial concentrates on bringing European artists to L.A., though this year the global migration includes plenty of talent from South America and Asia, too. "The biennial is an idea whose time has come, and its usefulness, to Los Angeles and the art world, remains undiminished," proclaims L.A. Weekly critic Peter Frank
Last weekend Los Angeles hosts the Scope Art Fair, was on view at the Standard hotel downtown. The lively alternative fair includes almost 30 exhibitors from the U.S. and Canada, ranging from 31 Grand (Brooklyn) and Bucheon Gallery (San Francisco) to Slate (Vancouver) and William Fong Curatorial Projects (Hartford).

BONTECOU ON VIEW
Opening this fall is the first museum survey of Lee Bontecou (b. 1931), the artist who became known during the 1960s for expressive, emblematic wall reliefs made of canvas stretched over welded metal armatures. "Lee Bontecou: A Retrospective" opens at the UCLA Hammer Museum, Oct. 5, 2003-Jan. 11, 2004, with approximately 60 sculptures and 75 drawings, including works that originally appeared in exhibitions at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York between 1960 and '71 as well as newer works made at her secluded studio in rural Pennsylvania. The show is organized by Chicago MCA chief curator Elizabeth A.T. Smith in conjunction with Hammer Museum director Ann Philbin. The show subsequently appears at the Chicago MCA, Feb. 14-May 23, 2004, and MoMA QNS, July 28-Sept. 27, 2004.

Several top museums have mounted big shows of Expressionism for the summer. At MoMA QNS is "Max Beckmann" (June 26-Sept. 29, 2003), with a complementary selection of Expressionist works from the Museum of Modern Art on view at the Neue Galerie in Manhattan (June 27-Sept. 15, 2003). Over in London, the Royal Academy of Arts is presenting "Kirchner: Expressionism and the City, Dresden and Berlin 1905-1918" (June 18-Sept. 21, 2003), while the Fondation Beyeler in Basel greeted the spring with an extensive survey show dubbed "Expressiv!" (Mar. 30-Aug. 10, 2003).

At the Design Museum London:
A CENTURY OF CHAIRS
No object tells the history of design more eloquently than the chair. From Michael Thonet's discovery of how to mass-produce chairs in the late 19th century and Marcel Breuer's pioneering use of tubular steel at the Bauhaus in the 1920s, to recent advances by contemporary designers such as Jasper Morrison, Jurgen Bey and the Bouroullec brothers, the chair has long been the focus of experimentation in design. The Design Museum tells the design history of the chair through the classic examples in its collection. Visitors can try out many of the classic chairs in the show - by sitting on them.

WHEN FLAMINIO DROVE TO FRANCE - FLAMINIO BERTONI'S DESIGNS FOR CITROEN
One of the most remarkable collaborations in design history was between the Italian designer Flaminio Bertoni and the French car company Citroen. Beginning in 1934 when Bertoni designed the bodywork of the Citroen Traction Avant - reportedly in a single night - it continued in the 1940s with the design of the supremely functional 2CV and in the 1950s with DS19, a car so alluring that it was nicknamed "the goddess". This exhibition will combine sketches, working drawings, models, components and the original cars to explore Bertoni's collaborations with gifted Citroen engineers such as Andre Lefebvre. 1 August to 12 October 2003.
In the Digital Design Museum, Jonathan Ive, winner of Designer of the Year, discusses the development of the iMac, iPod and other Apple products.

Japanese architect Toyo Ito is to create a Glasgow home for department store Selfridges. His plans for the �90million store in the Trongate are shrouded in secrecy - but the design is being hailed as the most spectacular ever seen in Scotland. Award-winning Mr Ito's store will be four or five-storeys high and is expected to take full advantage of the 130-metre Trongate frontage.

Sounds of relief are audible at Disney Hall The polished steel exterior of the Walt Disney Concert Hall is already familiar. Inside, the paint is dry, and few hard hats are in evidence. But one lingering question has been the most important: How will it sound? On Monday morning, that question was finally, if not conclusively, answered when the Los Angeles Philharmonic had its first rehearsal in what will become its home in October.

The same day the U.S. House voted to block FCC rules easing media ownership restrictions, NPR's Fresh Air had a fine show on consolidation in the radio business and Clear Channel's role in the music industry. Listen to it here.

When asked about the perception that musicians now must deal with the company, its live venues and its concert promotion arm SFX or face not hearing their songs on the radio, Clear Channel Radio CEO John Hogan said: "There is absolutely, unequivocally no connection between what gets played on the radio and what concert tours or venues are chosen."

Mentioned this once before but if you remember things like I do, it takes a lot of repeating. Dance music lovers and jazz aficionados should take note of this free DJ/jazz collaboration in Brooklyn on this Sunday. DJs open the event, followed by percussionist Daniel Moreno, who leads the charge with his masterful playing and gargantuan collection of exotic instruments collected from around the world. Various members of the Spiritual Life record label join Moreno, including jazz musician Adam Holzman and DJ Joe Claussell. All this happens in beautiful Ft. Green park and is Free. The park is easy to get to from the A(Lafayette stop) or G(Fulton) subway stops. The party starts at 3pm and goes till 9pm. Bring Food, Blankets,and Friends

I feel like rambling, so �

If there�s one question I hate more than anything its �what�s your favorite electronic release?� it�s a complicated and awkward question for me and usually I give up fighting after some pressure and I just spurt off the typical �Brotherhood� or �Selected Ambient Works�. I figure no one will hassle me if I just give them something they own, and it�s kind of true being I really love both records; it�s just not entirely true.

Though every time I�m asked I do think of Jim O�Rourke�s mostly unnoticed (by non-critics that is) Mego release �I�m Happy, and I�m singing, and a 1, 2, 3, 4�. I never say it though because usually when you enter Mego territory one of three things happen: most commonly the person will have never heard of Mego and they can only place O�Rourke because he produced Wilco and is now an official member of Sonic Youth. A little less commonly, they know of Mego and consider it the most ridiculous and pretentious label in existence. Thirdly, and the most rare, they know of Jim O�Rourke�s dealings in electronic music and consider him the greatest producer to ever touch a PowerBook. I fall in that last category (though I won�t deny that Mego is ridiculous).

I�ll admit sonically it isn�t as ground breaking as it was three years ago, but in my opinion it�s irrelevant because of the context this record had in the genre. The last few years we�ve been in this awkward transitional phase, the academic and dance spectrums were blending into one unified genre and the always-restricted electronic music fans were caught buying records they would have never dared touch a few years prior. Academic fans were buying releases from the minimal tech labels, and the dance fans caught themselves listening to the likes of Autechre in their �Confield� era. Ideology was becoming increasingly irrelevant and O�Rourke with his always perfect timing decided to release a purely electronic based record, and if I�m not mistaken, his first.

Timing is O�Rourke�s greatest gift, in the three genres he conquered, rock, avant-jazz, and avant-classical, before setting his foot into electronic music were done with records which fit the moment and gave you an experience which seemed just perfect. I�m often told by my older friends who got to witness O�Rourke play in his Thrill Jockey rock days that he changed everyone in the audience but if you went back and listened to the recordings they almost ruined the experience for you, O�Rourke�s recordings were meant to be heard in a certain time frame and outside of that they would have little relevance.

It�s true too, I don�t listen to �I�m Happy, and I�m Singing, and a 1, 2, 3, 4� much, if at all anymore but it still has this hold, this effect on me which has never let up.

Paper. I would like to say that I never leave the house in the morning without a pen, but sometimes I do make this disastrous mistake. Once I realize my error, the feeling I get is not unlike what a dug addiction must be like. �Must have pen!� is all that runs through my mind as I check my pockets over and over, hoping it might appear by sheer will. The second I satisfy my fix with pen in hand, another fundamental need wells up with equal force, �Must have paper!� However, I find that paper addiction is much easier to satisfy than the pen addiction because in the worst case I can write on a scrap piece of paper from my wallet or the interior of my car, or a napkin or placemat, or, at a last resort, my hands (although recently I have discovered that, depending up on the season, the abdomen can be a flatter surface). To most of us, paper is more a state of mind than an object � it is a place outside our minds to think and reflect. It is unfortunate that the display technology of the computer we use has been designed around the flat, rectangular metaphor of machine-cut paper, instead of the unflat, unrectangular, and infinitely multidimensional space of pure computation.

Speaking of dance records, Detroit's own lovable Todd Osborne, known to the peeps as "Soundmurderer" had his Violent Turd (the Kid606 ran mix label) disc reviewed on Pitchfork today. Even the geeks cannot deny the rebirth of jungle. If you haven't heard it (though I suspect most of you have) go, download, enjoy.

Chances are you've never heard of Sonic Terror if you're outside of the mid-west, but, if you're lucky enough to live in Ohio or lower-Michigan their probably your favorite electronic label. They only have a handful of releases which were put out with absolutely no money and an almost punk rock sensibility. They released one of the most breathtaking records in the realm of dance music, Enduser�s "15 Tracks" (which Pitchfork gave a 9, one of, if not, the highest rating for any dance record) and I'm sure there�s more coming.

In fact, there is:

Design competition winners have been announced by Friends of the High Line. The City of New York has committed $15.75 million to revitalizing the elevated train line on the west side of Manhattan for public use. Design submissions are on view at Grand Central Terminal through July 26th.

Schnack is the only late night spot to get *ahem* artisan sausages, cheap imported beer you've never heard of and tasty little teeny burgers, all within shouting distance of Burnlab HQ. As of July 20th, Schnack will be open until 2am (kitchen until 1am.) Another reason to stray from Smith Street and enjoy our strange little corner of Brooklyn called Red Hook. I don't know which is cooler/geekier: that they have a billboard print of a Black Label ad or that they have a blog.

Speaking of Brooklyn, long time DUMBO cultural institution (largely responsible for the neighborhood's revival) Gale Gates et al. will be closing for good at the end of the month. It will leave a vacuum in the avant garde theatre community for certain.

Where have all the free summer parties in NYC gone? Word of mouth has turned what started out as a few one off events last year into a sunday afternoon/evening weekly at Ft Green Park in Brooklyn. Put together by DJ Tabu and a cast of other really great DJ's who know sundays were made for house music. Rumor is there will be a special live performance from a mysterySpiritual Life Music artist on July 20th. Located in my new 'front yard', Ft.Green is easy to get to from the city or Brooklyn: Lafayette stop on the C or Fulton stop on the G and walk 2 blocks north. The party goes from 3 to 9pm. There's lots of grass space for blankets.

Bryan Black of Haloblack and H3LLB3NT has been a long-time collaborator with the likes of Prince and Chemlab. It should be no wonder that he is the first 'industrial' producer to craft a truly spot-on sexy and fresh sounding electropunk crossover. His latest project, XLover has released a small handful of 7"s and 12"s, including a remix of Daniel Diamond's Champu and a remake of Prince's Controversy on City Rockers Records - home of Felix Da Houscat and Tiga+Zyntherius. Watch for the Trash Me EP in early September. Also in the works is a new Haloblack LP titled Throb, described by the band as "deep, hard and bleepy".

On an unrelated note, as all things in the fickle New York City nightlife scene do, electroclash mogul Larry Tee's Berliniamsburg night at Luxx will be coming to an end this month. Many an entertaining Saturday night was spent there, where I've seen some of the best and some of the worst live electro acts ever. Ta ta.

Court: State of Michigan Wayne County Circuit Court Today eight jurors awarded recording artist/Detroit Electronic Music Festival founder Carl Craig victory in a contract dispute against Pop Culture Media and Carol Marvin.

The law suit was filed in May 2001. With the trial starting July 7, 2003 and ending July 10, 2003

Craig was awarded damages that equal the remainder of his contracted fee in 2001 and all unpaid expenses incurred directly from the 2000 DEMF. These expenses included artist hotel expenses, artist flights, and artist equipment rental fees.

Craig entered into an agreement With Pop Culture Media as Creative Director in 2000.

Since the law suit was filed in 2001 Carol Marvin changed attorneys four (4) different times in a suspected attempt to delay proceedings.

"I'm happy this is over. This is a weight that is lifted from my shoulders and now I can continue to pursue my musical and business endeavors" says Craig

Reference or rip-off?
The oft-praised Honda Cog ad is coming under fire, according to UK magazine Creative Review, by two Swiss artists, Peter Fischli and David Weiss (you may have seen their recent film, B�si (Kitty) at LA's MOCA). In fact, they've recently instructed their lawyer to send a letter to Honda to complain about alleged similarities between the Cog ad and their experimental 1987 art film, Der Lauf Der Dinge which takes place in a similar artists-studio setting, and documents a series of found objects setting off a complex chain reaction. "Are you a Mod or a Rocker?" a female reporter quizzed Beatle Ringo Starr in A HARD DAY�S NIGHT. His famous response � "I�m a Mocker" � neatly summed up the cocky, carefree spirit of the 1960�s, when every teenager with pegged pants and a shag (haircut, that is) started his weekend with "Ready, Steady, Go!" and droves of dollybirds in Twiggy/Suzy Kendall gear roamed the swinging streets of London. The 5th Annual Mods & Rockers Series kicks off with D.A. Pennebaker�s documentary of the landmark 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, followed by a Q&A with Fest co-organizers Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & The Papas and Lou Adler. Highlights of this year�s program include in-person Tributes to musician/actress Nancy Sinatra (THE WILD ANGELS), actress Leigh Taylor-Young (I LOVE YOU, ALICE B. TOKLAS) and director Roger Corman (THE TRIP). Other gems include the L.A. Dadaism reminded the world of independent spirits. It was a mixture of outrage, argument and absurdity that involved an almost childlike love of games. It was intentionally without logic at times, driven by chance and fantasy. These goals were pursued with passion, obsession and with a diversity unequaled elsewhere and at no other time in history. The Dadists shows at The Met Theatre in LA celebrate the lives of those artists who gave birth to a movement - for generations to come. They believe that as artists their purpose is to tell the story beautifully, emotionally, and honestly; after all, that is life. After the play follows musical performances by the Cabaret (Voltaire) and Dame Darcy.

Up Our Sleeve � an exhibit in which the web radio and DJ crew known as dublab invited 100 artists to transform white record sleeves (with a hole in the center) into display art. The show is traveling to NYC and San Francisco this summer.

The New York Sculpture Center held the first annual Blimp Derby last Saturday; event and installation by Olav Westphalen, 2003 artist in residence. The central element of this project was an afternoon of remote-controlled blimp races. Westphalen designed and built a blimp race track within SculptureCenter�s multi-story space. Westphalen and SculptureCenter invited participants and assemble teams to race blimps.

The Swiss art team of Peter Fischli & David Weiss is accusing the Honda motor company of copyright violation over a car commercial that began airing in Britain last April. The two-minute commercial for the Honda Accord, which supposedly took 606 takes to complete and involves disassembled parts of the Accord in an elaborate, Rube Goldberg-like set-up, is very similar to the artists' prize-winning 1987 videotape The Way Things Go. "As far as I know there's no such thing as copyright of an idea," a Honda spokesperson told the Guardian

Make room on your fall travel schedule for a visit to London. The first Frieze Art Fair, organized by the hip London-based contemporary art magazine -- count on art critics for good ideas! -- is set for Oct. 17-20, 2003, in a custom-built structure in London's Regent's Park.

British bad boy Damien Hirst has sworn off alcohol and drugs, and has been on the wagon for six months, according to a report in the London Evening Standard several weeks ago. "I don't think I will give up drinking forever," he said. "But it gets to the point where you can't control it so you've got to do something drastic." Hirst isn't completely done with the sauce, though -- he promises a new work based on the Last Supper, in which Christ and the Apostles are represented by 13 ping pong balls perched atop 13 fountains of red wine spurting out through medical tubing.

Fred Sandback, 59, Minimalist sculptor who shaped imaginary planes in space with taut lines of colored yarn, died at his studio in New York on June 23. He suffered from depression and committed suicide, according to an obituary in the New York Times. A Yale MFA grad, Sandback had one of his first solo shows in 1968 at Heiner Friedrich gallery in Munich. He subsequently opened his own museum, funded by Friedrich's Dia Art Foundation and located in a former bank building in Winchendon, Mass. (it closed in 1996).

Selected from the Getty's collection of photographs, this exhibition features the black-and-white work of three major American photographers of the second half of the 20th century: Garry Winogrand (1928 � 1984), Diane Arbus (1923 � 1971), and William Eggleston (born 1939). The approximately 90 photographs range in date from 1957 to 1974, spanning the era we think of as the sixties. That turbulent decade of cultural revolution inspired these talented photographers to develop three unique approaches to documenting the social landscape: Winogrand with a manic, amused cynicism; Arbus with an honest, confrontational mode; and Eggleston with the quiet irony of one for whom everything and nothing is significant.

to wind down from the festivities i just finished watching what should have been made into matrix 2: the animatrix. a dvd featuring short animations in some cases explaining the time before matrix 1 and in some cases being more worthy of a chapter from "the wind-up bird chronicles" from haruki murakami (part seven) (thanks to co-conspirator tony saracino for leaving that book after a visit to espa?a)..there�s even an try at being a new version of the final sequence from 2001 (final part)...infinitely more intellectual and challenging than the actual matrix 2, especially from the side of mixing traditional animation with cgi
