The highlight of last night's festivities was Jimmy Edgar's live set at the Detroit Underground showcase. The new material is so freakin' good, Jimmy is officially off the hook for not coming out to play the past few weeks. Other moments of brilliance included Nick's live set and Otto's cover of Right Said Fred's I'm Too Sexy. Indeed. And GHB successfully left everyone with permanent hearing and nerve damage. Excellent.

Primavera Sound 2005

Reciting the line-up on loop was my mantra for mid-way flat tire blues.
Said goodbye to my bike on the beach- and high-tailed it on foot to the Forum.
Just in time for jesu.
Past members of Techno Animal and Napalm Death-
They still enjoy the same sounds without getting stuck in a template of what worked for them.
Nice.
Up next- ran over to beam with pride.
It was a bit strange to see The Arcade Fire on such a giant stage.
but hell- The thousands of screaming, singing, dancing kids kept the outdoor venue just as claustrophobic as if it were the Horseshoe (Toronto).
They killed it! Very excited about this band- "Sleeping is giving in... So lift those heavy eyelids."
Missed Tim Hecker's set- cause my back was letting me know that I shouldn't have passed out sitting up the other night.
(stupid vodka shots).

More disappointing than my flat tire- was failing to assume I had to camp out a night prior to catch Antony and the Johnsons.
Scuffed the ground like a 12 year old, along with about 500 others... Hype is a bitch.
Next time.
Broken Social Scene blew my mind out the back of my head, as usual.
Danced, made a scene- hacky-sacked my brain a bit... tried to axel foley her back in- but Iggy and the Stooges
were next to stage. Ouch. Jumping on strangers always makes me feel alive again. Necessary as the energy that Iggy somehow channels puts me to absolute shame.

Yes- Outside. Beautiful Spring night in Barca- New Order takes the stage.
Despite the floppy reviews of their new album by the Spanish audience affecting some of the tone- They played an incredible set of both new and old material.
Sweet. Pockets of freak-out among the crowd (For some reason Spaniards don't really go nuts at concerts). I had a blast with my cheesy new new-wave niche.
A shade lighter than the mini-mosh I scrambled around in for Psychic TV.
Yes. Psychic TV- Awesome.
Genesis P-Orridge was in top form. Jaws were on the ground- arms in the air.
Had to spread myself a bit thin for Mercury Rev, the Human League and Piano Magic- but them's the beats when dealing with festival schedules.

Spent the day with Geoff "RV-Tour" Blanco at a brilliant conference for AES.
A lot of it was over both our heads- but the next few days look to be pretty damn interesting.
The AES conference is also being held at Forum- which made my evening with Tortoise, The Cheese (keep an ear out for these guys) Echo and the Bunnymen, SONIC YOUTH- and GANG OF FOUR (hell yes) a hop/skip/jump away.
All in all Primavera has been great- AES this afternoon- Then closing party with Broken Social Scene.
Come Tuesday- I might have to chill out and finally get to Napoleon Dynamite.

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 is now 13.92 billion kilometers (8.7 billion miles) from the Sun and has traversed the "termination shock," part of the frontier zone between the Solar System and interstellar space.

4:00am: Fuel up at base camp with asiago, reggiano and scallion frittata and framboise lambic (we do nothing half-assed.)
4:45am: Pile into Doc's van and scout for an inconspicuous parking location. A wild hare runs in front of the van and enters the building. For real! Serendipity continues...
5:00am: Enter Fisher Body 21 plant... in costume.
5:30am: Eight flights of stairs later and a precarious crossing over a severely water damaged floor, ascend water tower to view the sun rise over downtown Detroit.
6:00am: Tea time. Fine vintage china, embroidered table cloth, and English tea. (Again, we do nothing half-assed.)
6:30am: Urban exploring time. The only thing that compares to the industrial majesty of the Fisher plant is the amount of asbestos and lead paint we probably inhaled... whatever. No beauty without danger.
7:00am: Exit Fisher 21 and return to base camp, much satisfied grins all around from a successful adventure.

I was very pleased to discover that after 70 years, Tom's Tavern is still going strong (and it's the inspiration for an art show). Tom's was a regular Thursday night destination for architecture students and other delinquents. The adjective "ghetto" is thrown around a lot these days, but this place was pure uncut ghetto. I have fond memories of $0.75 Pabst Blue Ribbons and free boiled eggs at last call.
Now I hear that PBRs cost $1.50. Once again, where is the outrage?

Everyday my beloved city becomes harder to defend.
Where is the outrage?
Recently the Detroit's historical commission decided to allow demolition of the 105 year old Madison Lenox Hotel to make room for a low-end commuter hotel (or a parking lot, depending on who you ask). The destruction of this hotel is a symbol of Detroit's disregard for its architectural heritage. Francis Grunow from Preservation Wayne has organized a rally in front of the hotel on Friday, May 19, at 4:30. Pass it on.
On a semi-related note, it's good to know that Detroit does not have a monopoly on the architecturally-insensitive.

barcelonians: tomorrow, friday the 20th is the second edition of the night i´m promoting with martina hauser(promoter of tuesdays in ZENTRAUS), BORN 4 PORN (a pun on the fact that the party is in an area of barcelona called "el born" and that the night deals with "the history of sex". clever). last month was "kamasutra", next month "marquis de sade", and this month "ancient rome", with cut-up projections from the movie "caligula", the music of DJ REBECCA WEST, and me dressed as ceasar and martina as cleopatra. the night promises to deliver at best a seriously fun night and at worst serious personal embarrassment.

Hacking anything these days is fair game it seems. Take for example these Toyota Prius owners who've discovered how to get more mileage by making a few alterations. (NYTimes login required)
Here's an excerpt:

Opening this past monday at Lever House on Park ave. NYC, is Peter Wegner's latest installation called Lever Labyrinth. It's composed of 2.4 million sheets of 12"x12" paper. The installation invokes the experience of walking through the streets of Manhattan.
Wegner states: "In this sculpture, the questions are mediated by paper. It's just ordinary paper, not fine art material. We usually think of paper as nothing but surface, a two-dimensional plane. But paper has a third dimension-the edge. Those edges add up. The sheets become a stack, the stacks become a wall, and the walls become a maze.
Just to give you a sense of scale, the tallest stack is over 5 feet. The installation is in conjunction with the publishing of a limited edition book using the same paper. The exhibition is on view through September.
Oh and congrats Mike, o2 eh?

Nostalgia, anyone?
I just read this from top to bottom, and would venture to say that December 2003 was the best month ever fro Burnlab posts. SO much of what was written about that particular month has come back up in new and interesting ways the past few weeks, and so much of the commentary is just as relevant now as it was then. The ADULT. show Friday night was amazing [even better than expected - and that's saying a lot,] but the highlight of the weekend was definitely watching the sunrise from the roof of the Packard Plant this morning. Nothing quite like exploring abandoned buildings at 4am for appeasing the need for both adventure and aesthetic wonder. On the matter of such things, one of my partners in crime has more photographic evidence here.

On the Matter of Good Grades
We were under the impression that "Punks" did not care about being judged by fascistic authority figures and given some gold star or GPA number. But perhaps we will be proven wrong when Fox launches Punk Idol this fall and gives the talented young punk superstars of tomorrow a chance to strut their stuff!

As part of season two of Les Infants Terribles, we are officially reinstating punk rock points.
You know what I'm talking about, right? Everyone in high school kept track of these. For example:
Skinny Puppy logo painted on your leather: 3 points
Dead Kennedys logo: 5 points
Bill Leeb haircut: 3 points
mohawk: points awarded according to inches
[male] wearing a kilt with chombat boots to school: 9 points
Throbbing Gristle logo tattooed on your neck: 50 points
breaking things: 5 - 20 points
messing with cops and getting away with it: 8 - 12 points
actually being able to say you hung out at Neo Tokyo: 4 points
knowing John Tenney, period: 2 points
busting two beer bottles together and chasing off an unwanted guest: 20 points
not finding the humor in poop: minus 2 points
posting pictures of yourself in drag on Burnlab and getting reprimanded by me for using the word "twat": 8 points
reprimanding a Burnlab editor for using said word: minus 8 points
ditching a fancy party and almost getting kicked out of a Korean restaurant: 4 points
really bad English accents: negligible...
guilty of at least half of the above, while effortlessly maintaing a 3.5 or better GPA: no points awarded, but chances are you're on my MySpace friends list and/or a Burnlab editor.

The Crackers
"The Crackers" is as much a public happening as it is a tasty snack, defying the domino theory. Peanut butter or cheddar cheese. They poured their hearts and souls into the project for over 26 minutes. It required three dozen crackers and spanned over nearly 23 inches along a footbridge in the park at a cost (borne exclusively by the artists) of $2.50. Is it art? You decide.

Textura, which is quickly becoming my favorite source to read about new music, just updated their site with their May additions. Not only does Ron Schepper who's runs this informative yet objective site impress me with the direct method of cut-the-scene-crap music journalism, but He themes it to corresponded with whatever the main story is. For example: This month, textura's colour scheme and site imagery honour Deadbeat's New World Observer.

Mark your calendars NYC design folks....this weekend is the BKLYNDESIGNS show.
"The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Brooklyn Designs 2005 will return to St. Ann's Warehouse and the BKLYN DESIGNS Gallery in DUMBO from May 6 - 8, 2005. The show, already a fixture of the New York design scene, will feature Brooklyn-based designers and manufacturers of contemporary furnishings. It will include indoor and outdoor furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories."
A ticket for the show is $10 per day and there is a keynote presentation scheduled from sculptor Tom Otterness entitled "From a Studio in DUMBO to Public Spaces Worldwide" on saturday from 5-6pm
Remember also ICFF begins in two weeks.

White Noise / White Light was one of 9 temporary interactive urban installations commissioned and installed for the Athens 2004 Olympics from August 12 - 30, 2004 at the plaza entry to the Theater of Dionysus below the Acropolis as part of the ATHENS 2004: Catch the Light Program
- Activated by the passersby, the fiber optics transmit light from white LEDs while the speakers emit white noise. Just as white light is made of the full spectrum of light, white noise contains every frequency within the range of hearing in equal amounts. The white noise made for the project is based on a physical phenomenon called Johnson noise, where noise arises from the thermal motions of electrons in a resistor carrying current in an electronic circuit. -

I've been graciously asked to escort someone considerably more VIP than myself to a very exclusive party at the General Motors Technical Center on Tuesday evening, which will include a lecture on Eero Saarinen and test drives of upcoming Saab products. My friend, the inexplicable Thomas Truax will be performing this Monday night at CB's Gallery in NYC with Revue Noir. Expect to be enchanted, delighted and slightly disturbed by his array of mechanical sound sculptures and dark, romantic lullabies and lively rock melodramas.
Thomas recently performed a sold out show in Boston with one of my current infatuations, punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls - who happen to be on tour with Nine Inch Nails as we speak.
